In applying for residence certificates, aliens shall provide such information as requested and complete the following procedures:
(I) Submitting their passports and visas for examination;

(II) Presenting papers supporting their purpose of residence.

Foreigners who want to take up a job in China but do not yet have a residence permit must first obtain a Foreigner’s Employment Permit after approval.

Foreigners of the following categories are exempt from a Foreigner’s Employment Permit:

1. Those carrying a Foreign Expert Certificate;

2. Foreign labourers carrying a Work Permit for Foreigners Engaging in Ocean Petroleum Tapping in the People’s Republic of China who work on oil rigs, do not have to come ashore, and have special skills.

3. Foreigners carrying a Temporary License for Profit-Making Performance, who, with approval from the Ministry of Culture, engage in theatrical performance.

(IV) Those who apply for the Foreigner’s Residence Permit must at the same time present a health certificate and a 2-inch half-length bareheaded full-faced photo taken recently.
